South of Midnight, the visually striking action adventure from Xbox studio Compulsion Games, will bring its brand of “deep south mythos” to the PS5 from 31st March.
The critically acclaimed outing, which won the Games for Impact award at The Game Awards in December, sees you assume the role of Hazel Flood, who’s thrust into a Southern Gothic reality when her hometown of Prospero is devastated by a hurricane.
Here’s the official blurb:

“As Hazel, you will explore the mythos and encounter creatures of Southern folklore in a macabre and fantastical world. When disaster strikes her hometown, Hazel is called to become a Weaver: a magical mender of broken bonds and spirits. Imbued with these new abilities, Hazel will confront and subdue dangerous creatures, untangle the webs of her own family's shared past and – if she's lucky – find her way to a place that feels like home.”
Our friends at Pure Xbox were pretty hot on this one, with colleague Ben Kerry sticking a big fat 9/10 on the effort when it first launched last year.
He wrote:
“For me, South of Midnight is a bit of a triumph, and exactly the sort of thing I want to see more of from Xbox Game Studios. It's not perfect, and its combat mechanics are a bit lacking, but the game has so much soul, personality and charm that it's hard not to fall in love with it. I was engrossed with the storybook visuals, the well-delivered narrative and the satisfying traversal from start to finish, and I really can't recommend this one enough on Xbox Game Pass. Those of you that are more combat-first may not take a shining to this game quite as much as I have, but if you're looking for an engaging adventure that delivers soulful stories in spades, South of Midnight shouldn't be missed.”
This one should scratch that single player story itch, then, which is pretty much the PS5 faithful’s bread-and-butter these days.
Will you be picking it up?
